Michelle’s Red Fox Ranch blends her West Coast roots with Southern charm, creating a space that feels at once polished and welcoming. She and her family have lived on the property for nearly five years, and over that time, the barn has grown into a true hub for celebrations, music video shoots and creative gatherings. The barn office, in particular, wears many hats: green room, changing space, working office and a cool summer retreat for guests. “It needed to be practical, but it also needed to feel warm, inviting and reflective of the land around it,” Michelle recounts.  

The Perfect Before & After

When Michelle first stepped into the barn office, it was practically a blank canvas. The space had two worn couches and a rug left behind by the previous owners, but the possibilities were endless. Open skies, fields and trees inspired a space that would bring the outdoors in while still feeling refined and elevated.

Her decorating aesthetic leans classic and natural, with subtle coastal influences grounded in Southern tradition. “Originally, we had not planned to use the ranch for rentals or events. As that grew, so did the function of the barn office. It needed to feel elevated enough for bridal parties and creatives, but still grounded in authentic ranch life,” said Michelle.

The Power of Goodnight Moon 

So, how did Goodnight Moon come into the picture? The inspiration actually started with a Ralph Lauren piece, Polo Bar and Michelle’s desire for a deep, equestrian richness. She wanted the barn office to be dramatic, sophisticated and fully color-drenched, with walls that would shift beautifully in natural light.

 
“We designed a bit backwards. I had already fallen in love with an incredible piece of art and a new rug, and I wanted the paint to anchor them,” Michelle stated. By anchoring the room with this deep, enveloping shade, everything else, the vintage cowhide chairs, warm wood tones, layered textiles and a beloved piece of artwork from Santa Barbara, comes to life. Michelle shares, “Going dark can feel intimidating, but in the right space, it makes the room feel more cohesive and intentional. Goodnight Moon created depth and atmosphere that completely transformed the space without touching the bones of the room.” 

Layered, Personal and Full of Story 

Beyond paint, the barn office is all about thoughtful sourcing and personal touches. Vintage consoles, thrifted accents and found elements from the ranch, like branches styled in large vessels, add texture and personality. Every object feels collected, curated and tied together by that rich navy backdrop.  
 
Michelle’s favorite vignette? The artwork she found in Summerland, California, on a trip with her mom, paired perfectly with a rug sourced to match Goodnight Moon’s tones. The walls anchor the space while allowing each detail to shine.

Lessons Learned and Design Takeaways 

The biggest takeaway from Michelle’s project? Never underestimate the transformative power of paint. One color, carefully chosen, can completely redefine the mood and functionality of a space. Dark walls can be dramatic, cozy and surprisingly versatile.
